The young preacher in that film was a huckster as was Daniel Plainview. The scene where Daniel is giving a confession in the church directly parallels the last scene. Both of them are being forced to confess a great truth, (that Daniel has abandoned his son) and (that the preacher is a false and that God is in fact a superstition). they were similar characters, in that they could both see through each others bullshit. The only difference was that Plainview’s character was more likeable.
