I am a lifelong Democrat. Voted for Carter in the primaries on my 18th birthday. And usually I am very proud of my party, however, Bill Maher’s schtick on Sarah Palin’s daughter’s boyfriend this past week (9/19) on Real Time was a new low.
I don’t agree with Sarah Palin’s politics, or the Republican party much of the time, but to use an 18 year-old boy’s mistake as fodder for driving your political point home, is way below the line. It was like watching a drunken uncle bully a teenager at the Thanksgiving table. Only, in this case, no one at the table came to Levi’s defense and told Bill that enough was enough!
Mr. Maher may have thought himself very clever, but for Christmas sake, stop already with the disgusting low-brow remarks! Republicans are not his audience, so WTF is the point?
God Bless America (& HBO) that there is still freedom of speach and that HBO provides a forum for Bill and the dems to exchange ideas on the left and invites a Republican to chime in for the right. Satire and humor are the way that we can take an honest look at ourselves–our religion, our beliefs, our ideals. But, Bill Maher needs to use his brains here and elevate the discourse, not throw it under the bus. Janine Garofalo said last week that the Dems are ‘fundamentally more decent” than the Republicans. I had always (secretly) thought so… but, Bill…. you proved us wrong.

Dear Pat,
Bill was actually DEFENDING Levi.
I guess you just had to get your ideaology across.
Bill is very intelligent.
I understand that intelligence sometimes offends the ignorant like you Pat.
